In the Early Years and Key Stage 1, rigorous phonics teaching ensures that children are taught how to decode, and individual reading books are fully decodable until children move on to the higher stages. The Department for Education published a list of validated phonics schemes in 2022, among which was the Twinkl phonics scheme that we had already been using while we waited for the list to be published. We had great results, and the children and staff loved it, so we decided to continue with it. We have purchased multiple sets of Twinkl’s ‘Rhino Readers’ (along with some other books that align exactly with the Twinkl phonics scheme) which include fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Every book is decodable for children who know the sounds and common exception words for that particular level. This year, we are also trialling the Twinkl phonics workbooks, to help children to consolidate their learning.
