At Wiggonby, we 'Strive for Five', which means that children try to read 5 times every week. If they achieve this for four weeks during a term, they are awarded a bronze award. If they can keep it up for 8 weeks, they earn a silver award. A gold award is awarded to all children who manage to read 5 times a week for TWELVE weeks in one term. Every child in the school was awarded a bronze award by half term of the Autumn term. I wonder if every child can get a gold by Christmas!
We have a selection of home reading books. These are closely matched to the children's phonics level to make sure that they are practising the sounds that they are currently learning.
In February 2022, the government will release a new list of approved phonics programmes, and staff are looking forward to choosing their favourite. This will (rather excitingly!) mean that we can then update our home reading books to match. We do love new books!
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
